The Shaheed Minar ((Bemgali: শহীদ মিনার Shohid Minar lit. "Martyr Monument") is a national tombstone in Dhaka Bangladesh, recognized to memorialize those killed during the Language Movement demonstrations of 1952.
On February 21, 1952, dozens of students and political activists were killed when the Pakistan police force opened fire on Bengali protesters who were challenging equal standing to their resident tongue, Bengali. The mass murder occurred near Dhaka Medical College and Ramna Park in Dhaka. A rough and ready monument was erected on February 23 by students of University of Dhaka and other educational institutions, but soon demolished on February 26 by the Pakistani police force.
The Language association gained impetus and after a long fight back, Bengali was given equal status as Urdu. To memorialize the dead, the Shaheed Minar was considered and built by Hamidur Rahman, a Bangladeshi sculptor. The gravestone stood until the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, when it was demolished completely during maneuver Searchlight. After Bangladesh gained self-determination, it was rebuilt.
